Friend, I would like to posit that the majority of your subscribers give you money not to receive the content you put out but to support YOU, full stop. I hope you got a fat advance for your cookbook, but even if you did, I hope my couple bucks a month gives you a little more cushion for livin'. My comment probably won't alleviate the anxiety about it, but... consider it, would ya? :)
And regarding paid subscriptions, resume them when you have bandwidth for new content. Writing cookbooks can be a slog and while the extra income helps, sometimes you have to put it on the back burner. Whenever I’m in the depths of writing or editing a cookbook, I financially let my side hustles go.
That underscores the downside of cookbook publishing. But…. You want a solid book. That’s your current focus. All the best. 🤗
I think this is the right decision. Hope the book writing goes well and looking forward to request its purchase from my local library once it is out! <3
Thanks for putting paid subscriptions on pause. In fact, I think paid subscriptions are going the way of the dinosaur. I'd far rather purchase your book, in multiples, than pay Substack for content. Just my opinion, but it's one I hear from many others. Thanks for all you do -- I look forward to your book!
Thank you for sharing! And for saying you'd purchase multiples of my book *tear*
I think it's hard because the economics of books are so crap (even if you purchased my book in multiples I likely wouldn't see a cent of that money), plus books take so long to produce during which time you're making very little if any money. So unless you've got something else (or multiple something elses) going on on the side, you're not making money during the time you're writing a book. So from that perspective, I do see and benefit from the value of paid subscriptions and platforms that offer them as a way for folks to put money directly into creators' pockets. That being said, it doesn't feel ethical when you as the creator aren't putting out the content you say you're going to!

Yum. This is exactly what I want to eat!
Yuba noodles #FTW!

I hope the writing goes well. Until you're back, I will content myself with some tasty yuba "noodles."
